Description of relationship -
Season One: When the show begins Bette and Tina have already been together for 7 years. They want to start a family and are looking for a sperm donor to get Tina pregnant. During the first episode they make references to their lacking sex life, however by the second episode they have their first sex scene. Their relationship is clearly rocky and tense and they are seeing a therapist (Dan Foxworthy). However within the first few episodes things get much better and Tina gets pregnant. Bette shows her loving and tender side by taking care of Tina during the pregnancy (3 AM Slurpee run, gift basket, and coming home in the middle of a work trip, for example). However their communication still needs work and they argue regularly. When Tina miscarries the baby (1.10) things get even harder for Bette and Tina. Eventually in episode 1.12 Bette cheats on Tina for the first time with Candace, the carpenter she has hired to work at the CAC. Bette clearly feels guilty about it even though she continues her affair. In episode 1.14 Bette and Candace have sex at a hotel, and then Bette gets irrationally angry when Tina asks Candace to do some carpenter work for her. The next morning Bette apologizes to Tina, who accepts her apology but is still on guard. They make up when Tina finds Bette collapsed in the shower, thinking she is exhausted from the stress at work. Bette tells Tina she really wants to try to have another baby, but Tina says she needs more time. At Provocations (the art show), Tina sees Bette and Candace flirting and holding hands. When they get home, Tina tells Bette she knows what happened and slaps her across the face. They get in a huge fight and Bette starts raping Tina but it somewhat turns into consensual sex. Afterwards, Tina leaves and goes to Alice's apartment.
Season Two: In the season 2 premiere, after 5 months of no contact Bette goes to the Planet to see Tina and try to get her back. Tina gets pissed off and flips over a table. Over the next few episodes Bette continues to fight for Tina but Tina hires a lawyer (Joyce) and wants to make a final separation. Tina moves into Joyce's guest house, but when Joyce hits on Tina she moves out and moves back in with Bette. Bette takes this is a sure sign that they will get back together soon, but Tina is still on the fence. However when Tina meets Helena Peabody in episode 2.05 and Bette finds out through Helena that Tina is pregnant, shit hits the fan. Bette says that she wants a place in the baby's life because they "conceived of" the child together. Although she is unsure at first, Tina eventually agrees that Bette deserves to play a role in their daughter's life. After going to Tina's ultrasound appointment they have sex for the first time in ~6 months but agree that it doesn't mean they're getting back together. Later on Tina tells Bette she is not in an exclusive relationship with Helena and would like to spend more time with Bette. They agree to start "dating". When Bette's dad gets sick Tina supports her and they get closer again. After Bette's father dies Tina decides she wants to move back in with Bette and have their baby in their home.
Season Three: Bette and Tina are living together again and their daughter Angelica is 6 months old. They are visiting a sex therapist to work on rekindling the spark in their relationship. They start to fight about money frequently because Bette has not found a job that she wants to take, and she does not want Tina to work. However Tina decides to take a job that Helena offers her as a movie producer, which puts even more tension on their relationship. Tina also starts secretly talking to men in internet chat rooms. Bette finds out about the chats and Tina gets upset and denies it. Later on she admits she "fucked" a guy through the internet, and she is struggling with her curious feelings towards men, particularly her coworker Josh.

But things get weird when Helena's ex, Winnie Mann, walks in on them having sex. Tina is uncomfortable with the situation, but Helena doesn't give up on Tina. When Helena starts looking for a house to rent in LA, it becomes clear that Tina and Helena have very different lifestyles and world outlooks and they are most likely not compatible. After having sex with Bette, Helena goes to Tina's apartment and Tina goes off her rocker, aggressively hitting on Helena and asking if she is too ordinary for her, bringing up Winnie, and just generally going crazy. Helena leaves against Tina's protests and Tina cries. Later on Helena apologizes and makes Tina a nice dinner and shows her the nursery that she has made for Tina's baby. They continue dating, but Tina has sex with Bette and tells her that she is not exclusive with Helena. In the following episode (2.11) Tina tells Helena she wants to see other people and Helena becomes very passive-aggressive, telling Tina she feels bad she was under the impression they were exclusive. Helena starts dating other women and rubbing it in Tina's face, but Tina remains mostly unaffected. As Bette and Tina start getting closer again Helena gets jealous and continues to pursue Tina. They do not have an official on screen "break up", but in episode 2.13 Tina moves back in with Bette and by the season 3 premiere Helena and Tina are definitely no longer together.
